[And now to go back for our final visit with the fellows delving into the Lost Shrine of Tamoachan ]

DAY 477  (22th Kythorn)(June) cont ...

Barendd was dead, but the others were undeterred. As they were moving upwards in the Temple it was clear that they were reaching the end. There could only be so much left before they got to the top.

The next room they came to contained four strange mirrors and a bath or basin of golden liquid.  Fenrir looked in one of the mirrors and an Albino Ochre Jelly leapt out and attacked him. He retreated down the hall where he and the others chopped it up in the corridor.

After experimenting with the golden liquid they found that it had strange magical properties that made them feel healthier, so they all took a dip in it. It also had the odd effect of turning them temporarily gold in colour.

Along from the mirror room was a room that contained a large octopus shaped altar. They decided to leave it alone and moved on.

They continued in this way as long as they could, avoiding things that looked like traps as much as possible. The next chamber was very large and contained a diorama depicting a bleak landscape reminiscent of the Shadowfell. Small, brightly painted glass statues of people were placed throughout the diorama's landscape.

There was a hill in the middle and a sort of chimney shaft above it. Fenrir flew up the shaft and was attacked by two teleporting Phase-Spiders. They were tricky things to fight, but he slew them easily enough and their bodies tumbled down onto the hill, surprising those that waited at the bottom.

After it was cleared they all went up the shaft, climbing and being helped along by Fenrir, the only one of them that had magic that could fly or levitate.

The top of the shaft lead to a room with more basins in it, but they left these alone and moved on. Down the corridor they found a chamber guarded by an undead centaur - but Veddic turned it, then Fenrir blasted it to bits.

The next set of steps they found lead to the top of the ziggurat and outside. It was  mid-afternoon.

The top of the Temple contained a large bat-winged altar, down from which on a small square stood a witch-doctor, a dozen or so Olman savages and the 'Oni' they had met earlier.

Fenrir hit them all with a cone of Eldritch Power which killed or scattered the savages. The Oni and Witchdoctor put up more of a fight, but large areas like this was where Fenrir's magic was most effective and they did not last long. The Doctor was killed and the Oni fled. Fenrir decided to go after it though and shot the Oni out of the sky above the jungle.

Amongst the treasure under the alter was the sword the had come to collect, the mighty Blade of Ogsnith, commonly known as 'The Piecemaker'. A powerful magical great sword that was once wielded by the ancient kings of the Dragon Coast.

'So this is what all the fuss was about,' muttered Raz as he strapped it to his back. Gertrude the White must have somehow detected that the sword was in their possession, as a Sending message was received to stay put and an hour later Thjodhild teleported in to take them back to Westgate.
