[This continues the story of Rogier the bard, a warforged called Gravedigger and a goliath paladin known as Uthmar Shatterstone. They are currently beyond the portal they entered in the manor house of the Viers family and exploring the tombs and chambers they have discovered here. Recently they have left the dimension they were in via a portal and had a fight with some baddies and zombies.]

DAY 21 cont ...

Our brave heroes continued on their way towards the horrible looking city. As they got closer they could see it looked like it had been built on a volcano. There were broken up areas of rock, rivers of lava and clouds of steam where a river of water met the sea of lava the city lay next to.
Despite all this people seemed to live here! When a building burnt down they would build another one from the remains.

There was no wall or gate, so they entered through a slum-like area where the dregs of the city resided. The low buildings were made from raw cut local stone, but sometimes they could see some older, dressed blocks that had been engraved with demonic looking depictions and sigils.

Following a main road into the centre of town they discovered a market. The people here were a mix of all the races, but mainly tieflings, then the next most common being humans.

Our three heroes, being dressed in less shabby attire and with an air of innocence and wonder about them attracted glances, but no one they had met so far wanted trouble. Gravedigger pulled up the hood of his cloak anyway.

The market had stalls in its middle and shops around the sides. There was an inn on its eastern edge called the "Crimson Flame".

They entered and talked to the tiefling barman and rented some rooms for a few silver coins, which was apparently just as legal tender as back in Faerune.

Uthmar and Rogier then took all the loot from Gravedigger, a big bag of arms and treasure and went to sell it in the market. Despite being the one that had carried it Gravedigger was not interested in its value and told the men they could keep all the gold they got from the sale.
It took a while for the greedy fellows to understand that the warforged really meant it.

They were gone all day, haggling away in the market for hours and hours over every sword, every bit of armour and every trinket. This gave Gravedigger time to ask around and find out the following:

- As he has suspected they were in Avernus
- The city they were in was called Diaballon
- There had been a group of folk come through recently, they had set up camp
    beside the coliseum
- There was a lot of traffic between the camp and the coliseum
- Nasty characters were keeping the camp closed off

It was late in the evening when the others returned, with jingling coins purses and smiles on their faces.

'I think I may have discovered what happened to the people of Everaska,' said
Gravedigger.
'What? Who?' asked Uthmar as he approached the bar. 'Innkeep! What do you have that a goliath can drink around here? Uthmar got a thirst on!'
