[Fenrir, Raz, Veddic and Reinward are at the 70th Birthday Party of Lady Gwendeth Thalavar.]

DAY 494 (9th Flamerule)(July) cont ...

Scamps that they were, Fenrir and Raz found a plate of garlic bread and mushrooms then went to talk to Thistle and Dauntinghorn again. If the vampire knew he was being taunted though, he gave no indication of it.

Raz also tried to make polite conversation with Thistle, but after dropping a few clangers he decided to just keep quiet. Fenrir did his best to smooth things over.

The party went on to midnight, and after that they all went home.

DAY 495(10th Flamerule)(July)

Fenrir went to work this morning and Portia (his unofficial spymaster) told him that currently his next target, Blackthorn - Druid of Silvanus, was in Gulthmere Forest. This is a vast area about 700 miles to the south east of Westgate. Fenrir worked out that using Wind Walk it would take about 12 hours to get to the only city there, a place called Cedarsproke.

Meanwhile, young Reinward was up to some tricks. He borrowed (stole) a figurine from the house, then weakened and wrapped it to make something that he would use in a scam called a 'melon drop',

He found the perfect 'mark' in the Market Square, bumped into him, dropped and smashed the figurine then demanded 30 gold!
The man turned to face Reinward and he got a good look at him. This unusually ugly fellow had a tusk and a wall eye, with fiercely red hair sticking out from under his hat.

After some badinage, the man presented his card and said;
'I shall give you 10 gold now. Come to my apartment this evening and I shall give you the rest.'
Reinward agreed. When the man had left, he looked at the card. The man's name was Azazello, and the address was in a rich part of the city.

Reinward went home and returned the figurine. He tossed a gold coin to Gelly, presumably seeking to impress her with his wealth.
'Err, thanks I guess,' she said with a nod.

He then went for lunch at a street vendor's stall. Much to his surprise an enormous fat cat that was also getting his lunch there struck up a conversation.
'Don't go to Azazello's house tonight!' warned the cat. 'He is a dreadful rogue!'

Later in the evening though, Reinward did not heed the cat's advice, but he did take Fenrir with him to be on the safe side.

The old porter let them in and Ren tossed him a silver.
'Thank ye kindly young man. Number 13 is it? Strange lot up there, comings and goings at all hours. Loud noises, disturbances. You name it.'

When Ren knocked on the door it was answered by a tall naked lady with red hair. She ushered them in and they saw Azazello and the big black cat playing chess by the window, enjoying the warm evening breeze. Just then the cat dropped a playing piece and dove under the sofa to retrieve it.

'Ah and you bring a friend,' said Azazello after the greetings. 'Who are you, young man?'
Fenrir was in disguise and gave the name, 'Wilbur.'
'Wilburt? Wilburt? What sort of name is Wilburt? Did we know a Wilburt back home, Behemoth? Where is that stupid cat?'

Behemoth popped up from behind the sofa. 'Got it!' he exclaimed and put a knight back on the board. 'Hey! You've been moving then pieces!'
Before a fight could break out, the naked lady, Hella, entered and served tea.
'Got any sandwiches?' asked Ren, who was always chancing his arm.
Hella sniffed and went back into the kitchen.

Neither Fenrir or Ren drank the tea, or ate the sandwiches when they arrived.
Fenrir noticed he was being watched closely and asked, 'what are you looking at?'
'How rude!' said Azazello.

Reinward went to look at the chess set and saw that the pieces seemed to be real, but very small people. The knights were in armour and the bishops wore vestments. The white queen, lovely in a silver crown and pale gown looked up at him forlornly and whispered, 'Help us!'

Reinward tried to fake stumble into the board, but Azazello caught him and said, 'you seem to be a remarkably clumsy fellow!'
'Just give me my money and I'll leave!' replied Ren.
'Now now,' came the answer. 'We need to get down to brass tacks before you are  permitted to leave.'

Reinward found the main door was locked so he went into the kitchen. Seeing Hella there he mumbled a chat up line, to which the answer was;
'Never mind all that, give us a kiss!'

Meanwhile, Fenrir was still in the day room. 'What do you mean "permitted"?'
'Just this,' replied Azazello. 'Stay until our friend Fagotto returns. He'll sort all this out. He's better with words than me or Behemoth.'

Fenrir had had enough though and went to get Ren. He searched the apartment but the young rogue had vanished. He detected all sorts of magic in every room.
'What's going on?' demanded Fenrir.
'Well, we need to talk about our future together,' replied Azazello.
'What are you talking about?'
'Did you meet the baker?'
At first Fenrir didn't know what he meant, but then he remembered one of the men he had killed recently, a baker called Erinod Bale, who was an agent of demons.
'Uhhhh,' groaned the young warlock. 'You're one of that bunch.'

Fenrir went on to demand that his friend be returned so that he could leave.
Azazello was evasive, so Fenrir threatened to start Blasting.
'Oooh, he's going to let rip, this will be good!' said Azazello gleefully to the cat.

Fenrir went into the dining room, noticing not for the first time how much larger the apartment was compared to the building it was in.
He Blasted the wall, searching for secret doors.
Azazello entered and said, 'this is all great fun, but if you start wrecking the place, then I'm going to try and stop you.'
'What is it you want?' asked Fenrir with a sigh.
'We simply want to be included in whatever scheme you are running here!'
answered Azazello. 'Westgate would be a new front in the Bloodwar for us.'
Fenrir decided to wait for Fagotto, to see what he had to say.

Meanwhile, the succubus and her victim had found themselves in a large dimly lit cave. She had drunk her fill of him and they were lying back on some furs together.
'How did you get those marks on your wrists?' she asked.
'I don't know,' Ren replied, noticing that he now only had nine.
'Huh, well, you can go now,' she said as she shut her eyes.
There was a door at the end of the cave and Ren went to it.

When he arrived back in the day room, Fenrir decided not to wait and they left together as quickly as they could.

DAY 496(11th Flamerule)(july)

Fenrir went to work today and his main task was to deal with a rich nobleman who had 'accidentally' killed his servant. His name was Ponza Athagdal, and he basically wanted to bribe Fenrir to make the problem go away.

Fenrir made him pay for the servants resurrection, making himself popular with the common people, but less so with the nobles.

At noon he met Reinward and together they went and picked up their armour that had been getting enchantments placed on them.

Fenrir also purchased some manacles and several pairs of old socks, for reasons that at the time could only be guessed at.

DAY 497(12th Flamerule)(july)

In the morning Fenrir and Ren went to the House of Ilmater to find that it had been burned to the ground and that Yatte and everyone else had disappeared.
They talked to the neighbours and found that this had happened two days ago.

Fenrir wasn't that interested though as he was in search of someone who could cast Hallow spells on his house. He talked to a cleric at the House of Talos and got a quote for 1500gp per casting and an extra 1000gp for extra spells added to the Hallows.
He estimated to get full coverage of the house would cost 24,000 gold.

He said he'd think about it, then tracked down a Civil engineer called Lindsey Juerez the Mason, a man in his twenties that headed up a small company of builders.

He agreed to dig a much deeper ditch, a moat really, that was five feet wide and three feet deep for 50 gold. This would take ten days.
'How you fill it with water though, I don't know, my lord,' he warned.

DAY 498(13th Flamerule)(july)

Today Fenrir, Raz, Veddic and their new friend Reinward set off for Cedarsproke. They arrived about eight in the evening.

I have only ever heard about this city, but as I understand it, it is run by druids. To be totally honest with you, I hate druids and I do my best to avoid them.

I find the younger ones are always pestering me for advice and the older ones are always telling me what to do. Druids do not, generally, get on with other druids, in my experience anyway and I prefer the company of rangers or barbarians, who revere nature and hold druids in great esteem.
Perhaps that sounds egotistical, but it is sadly true.

Still, I would like to visit one day. It is a city among the trees, with many houses built in them or up them, with leafy glades and pleasant meadows it is more a large inhabited and well forested park than anything else.
Six thousand or so people live there and it has a full compliment of taverns and shops.

They landed and walked into the city. It has no walls or gate, it uses its isolation as its primary defence. A friendly enough half-elf ranger met them  as they came in and asked them their business.

They were disguised as merchants;
Fenrir - Eandhehrt Dige - merchant - mid 30s
Raz - Ephes Ringe Aerbed - also a merchant
Ved - Rarder Heny - spiritual advisor - mid 30s
Ren - Jim-Bob, the only one of them not using a Hat of Disguise

'We wish to open up trade between here and Westgate,' said Fenrir, making it all up on the spot.
'Oh really?' asked the ranger. 'What do you trade in?'
'Um, you know, stuff. Trade goods.'
'Very well my friends,' said the half-elf as he was clearly not interested, 'Carry on along this road and when you get to the main square the Guild of Merchants is opposite the Temple to Silvanus.'

They didn't go there though, they went to a tavern called the 'The Jugs of Plenty' and got good rooms, food and drink.

[While all sorts of interesting things were going on in Westgate, I (Rollo) was in the company of a young half-orc called Tabaldak (Dak for short) on the Island of Yacg'harr. ]

DAY 518 (Eleasis) (August)  cont ...

As we walked back to where Silas was lying low, Dak kept on questioning me. He was rather surprised at the number of crocodiles that I could summon and my other magical powers. I decided to stay in my disguise as 'Pierre the Historian' for now and told him I was an adept.

'Is that like a shaman?' he asked. Yes, I replied, just like a shaman.
'And Rolanda is my spirit guide,' I decided on the spot.
Rolanda gave two ratty thumbs up from my shirt pocket.

Silas located, we handed the Emberblade to him, much to his delight. As he consulted his books we then went over to the islands General Store (or a fence for goods stolen by pirates more like) and sold all the loot we'd picked up in the dungeon. Dak bought better armour with his share.

We had lunch at the tavern (the food here is very low standard as you might expect in a pirate port) and then wandered back to see Silas. He knew what to do next. Hidden amongst the hills of the island was the barrow of the 'Evil King' whoever he was and it was here that we were to deploy the Emberblade.

On such a small island it did not take long to locate. There were seven standing stones on top of it and two openings lead down into the gloom. Rolanda refused to go in, and scampered away.
I summoned a crocodile and it too could not be persuaded to enter the barrow.

I shrugged and went down the left hand passage. Dak went down the right. There was a single chamber, with a curtained off raised dais with a sarcophagus on it to the left. To the right was an arch that portioned off the end of the chamber to the right.

There was a tapestry on the wall above the dais, that depicted an unjust looking king doing, battle and then meeting his come-uppence. There were two other small tunnels on the wall opposite the entrance and these led to a small workman's room and a room that was filled with water.

I returned to the sarcophagus and knocked on the lid. To no great surprise a spectral figure wearing a crown appeared and attacked us. It was difficult to fight this creature as it was incorporeal and I was denied the use of my summoning spells.
It's touch was draining and it was not long before we were both weak from it. I backed off, fearing death and Dak kept it at bay with the Emberblade.

I summoned a Flaming Sphere and harried the spectre with it, while Dak attacked it with the Blade. We missed it a lot, but eventually enough blows landed and one last swing destroyed it forever.

There were some coffers with treasure in them, so we helped ourselves to that, then I took a proper look around. Could this chamber contain the portal I had been looking for?

There were pillars running down its middle, there was discolouration on the floor between them and the back wall to the right of the entrance. There was also a socket in one of the pillars about the size of a fist.

I did not understand and eventually we left. Back at Silas's hide out we had a nice sit down and a cup of tea and discussed the events of the day.

The 'Evil King' he told us, was King Thamas Stone the Demented, a ruler that had been exiled from Sasserine centuries ago and who had died on the island.

It was getting on for afternoon when we returned to the barrow and I got Silas to look at the pillars. The barrow had lost a lot of its evil aura and Rolanda even came in to take a look. Silas said he would look through his notes in regards to portals and see what he could find out.

After that we returned to the tavern and got rooms for the night.

DAY 519 (Eleasis) (August)

I cast as many Lesser Restoration spells as it took to get me and Dak back up to full strength first thing in the morning and then went to the main room for breakfast.

We wandered over to see Silas and he said he would be a few days in his research. We left him to it.

I wandered around the settlement to get a feel for the place and gauged there to be about 200 people living here. The place is home mainly to ex-pirates I think, and those that like to be far away from civilisation and the law.

After the village I looked around the island. It did not take long as it is not very big, but there are other things hidden in and around the rugged areas of mountains and cliffs, of that I am sure.

Well, if I do decide to settle this island I will either make my own place or have this tavern renovated! I'm thankful for the Magic Bedroll I take everywhere with me as I think there are bugs in the one provided by the inn.

DAY 520 (Eleasis) (August)

I decided to fly back to Sasserine this morning to report back my findings to Lavinia and see how she was doing. Dak wanted to come with me, for his own reasons, so I offered to give him a lift on my back.

It was a ten hour flight, so I was a little tired when we landed. As is my custom we  landed outside the city and walked in through the gates.

We then went to the Vanderboren Manor and over dinner I told my wife everything I had discovered about Yacg'harr Island. She did not seem overly concerned that I had dragged back a half-orc with me.

DAY 493 (8th Flamerule)(July)

Not entirely sure what to do with young Reinward, Fenrir took him to work with him and dumped him in the canteen.

The next thing Fenrir did was to set Portia onto what she could find out about Blackthorn, the Druid of Silvanus who was apparently also a member of the Nightmasks.

A hooded dark elf approached Reinward and introduced herself as Merlock Tomes. You may remember that she was a detective that operated in Pedestal, a city in the Underdark.

She gave her name and Reinward gave his as 'Jim Bob'.
'Are you friends with Commander Lightingrod?'
'I know him from Waterdeep, from back in the day,' he replied warily.
'Can i get you to arrange a meeting with him?'
Reinward said he would be able to do so for the princely sum of 15 gold.

Mia the Magical, a stern 125-year-old female elf and Fenrir's assistant was not impressed with Reinward though and made him wait. He sat beside a man that looked like a rogue and another that looked like a monk.

Reinward watched as the man picked the pocket of the monk. Reinward swapped seats and whispered into the rogues ear, 'I saw what you did!'

The rogue, one of Fenrir's informants by the name of Mr Prantopo told Reinward to mind his own business.
'Tell us what you got, or I'll snitch,' said Reinward
'You stay out of it, if you want to keep your kidneys,' growled Prantopo.
Just then Prantopo was called in and Reinward was left alone with the meditating monk.

Half an hour later he was able to bring up Merlock, who was happy to tell Fenrir that she knew him from Pedestal.
'I'm investigating another murder!' she told them.

It was the murder of Katheera Urdo, of House Urdo who had recently been resurrected and was determined to get her revenge on her killer - Barry Shitknees (aka Fenrir).
Merlock wondered what Commander Lightingrod (aka Fenrir!) could tell her about this man.

'Oh he's terrible!' declared Fenrir. 'He's going around killing lots of bad people, a sort of vigilante.'
'Are the watch actively trying to apprehend him?' she asked.
'That's sensitive information?' he replied.
'All I can say is that this has the hallmarks of a power struggle within the gangs of the  city,' he went on, sticking to the script that Random had set.

Merlock thanked him and gave them both her card, with the address of a local inn on it. She then thanked Reinward and gave him his gold and left.

That evening Random came around to the house and privately told Fenrir;

'Keep that fellow Reinward as close to you as you can! He's vital to our mission here.'

Random then very kindly arranged for Reinward to receive quite a lot of magical items and went back to his island.

Next Fenrir had Veddic cast a 'Mark of Justice' on Reinward. Hearing about this later I am amazed that Reinward so readily allowed Fenrir to curse him, but perhaps he had been dazzled by the 50,000 gold pieces worth of magical items that had just been lavished on him!

DAY 494 (9th Flamerule)(July)

At two in the morning, Reinward, who was sleeping in one of the spare rooms of Fenrir's house, was awakened by tapping at the window.

He opened the curtains to reveal a vampire perched on the window sill. Reinward, in a high state of terror closed the curtains and hid under the covers.
'Let me in,' whispered the vampire. 'I just want to talk to you...'

Reinward bolted out into the landing and called a guard, then inexplicably went back into his room. He had, perhaps, remembered some of his vampire lore and grabbed a hand mirror from the dresser. He then opened the curtains again and pretended to check his appearance in the mirror.
This plan did not work. A vampire must have the mirror thrust before them to have any effect and thus Reinward was dominated by its undead powers.
'Come to me,' whispered the vampire. 'Let me see these remarkable wrists of yours...'

Reinward shuddered and dropped the mirror. This was what saved him, as it cause the vampire to
hesitate.
It was not forced back by the shards of mirror, but it drew its attention for a moment, so that it was not aware when Fenrir, who had just flew out of another window, blasted it into ashes.

As the vampire remains floated to the ground Reinward staggered back.
'Close that bloody window!' shouted Fenrir as he wafted past.

Fenrir investigated and found one of his guards, dead, in the street and a barrel of sand that had been dumped into the ditch so the vampire could cross the running water. He woke up Jasper and asked him to sort it all out.

In the morning they did some shopping, for magical armour, and sold piles of recently acquired treasure to one of Random's brokers.

Later on Gelly returned from he wanderings and told them;

''
There have been kings in Westgate before. Within living memory of some people, such as  dwarves and elves. The last king was King Verovan Lorndessar who ruled 1236 – 1248.

It's been Croamarkhs since then.

But this prophecy is ancient! It dates back to the time of King Hygaarth Croam “the Pious” who ruled 75 - 95!

He was a priest of Ilmater, elevated to the throne after battling a plague that nearly destroys Westgate.

From what I gather it was around for many years back then, mentioned in several texts, but then largely  forgotten during the time of the Pirate Kings (257 – 429).

Then they were found again and translated by Berneris the Scholar, a nun of Illmater, around the time  of the reign of King Temprith Ilistar (756 – 759).

You'll need to go to the temple to learn what the actual prophecy is though...

''

This they did and Yatte was happy to read it to Reinward;

''
Then one chose of Illmater will come,
On ancient wings and by fated airs decree,
No players proclaim, no fife, no drum,
But by quiet night, by land or sea,

Armlets worn on the wrists, two by five,
Stigmata shown, that all may see,
God magic laid on skin, so men may strive,
to see the bearers grace and piety,

Go forth from the temple, o' one marked,
With two of fire and one of sword,
The burden great and the mantel dark,
To seek the advice of the holy word,

In the depths, down below so far,
Sits a spider, or an ancient queen, of thirst unslake,
The ten-eyed crown found in a cavern lair,
Follow the flame to a light-shunned lake,

O chosen one, what doom do the fates bring?
The sacrifice, the suffering eternal,
Broken bones, and life's blood draining,
Soul-gifted to those infernal,

But lo, a king comes, to rule benign once more,
Bearing enchanted sword and divine rod,
A mighty host shining from city and shore,
In the name Illmater, the Broken God.
''

Yatte also said to Reinward, 'I have detected that you are accursed. I can break this enchantment if you like.'

Reinward, for reasons I cannot fathom, answered in the negative. Perhaps he did not wish to risk Fenrir's ire?

Reinward thanked Yatte and donated 100 gold to the temple.

Fenrir had an engagement that night, the 70th birthday of Lady Gwendeth Thalavar. He decided to go mob-handed and took Raz, Reinward and Veddic.

Fenrir concentrated on finding Thistle Thavalar and making sure Raz didn't make a fool of himself. Trystran Dauntinghorn was there though and while he was charming and gentile, Fenrir wondered, with the passage of time, how Dauntinghorn viewed the escapade at the fete.

Dauntinghorn pointed at Reinward. 'You have a new acquaintance? May I be introduced?'
Dauntinghorn shook Reinward's hand and said, 'I can hear that you have a Sword Coast accent. I hope you are able to sleep in our warm climate...'

Reinward, who of course had not slept very well last night at all was about to make a rude remark, but was cut short by Fenrir making fangy-bitey gestures behind Dauntinghorn's back.

Reinward, instead, got away as soon as he could and went to dance with a well-fed young lady called Lesa Ujum.
She was big, and looked strong, but he was very drawn to a large gold chain that she had around her neck and expensive looking rings on her hands.
They had a few drinks and chatted. She seemed fairly docile.

Reinward tried the old 'rabbit grease and pepper' trick and pocketed one of her rings! After a short while she noticed it had gone and in flood's of tears she created such a scene that Reinward had to glumly press into a pie crust and say, 'oh look - is that it?'

She engulfed him in a hug, breathlessly sighing into his shoulder - 'my hero!'
